Lotus Notes ( up to 8.5.2 ) AllClient issues and webkit package names and resulting download file names

It still seems that people are having issues with "Cannot upgrade AllClient installation to Notes client. The upgrade you are attempting is not supported" errors. Be very careful because it's easy to install the wrong webkit and then look up the error and change the installtype in the notes.ini ( btw changing the install type is not recommended under any circumstances and is not support by IBM ). Hopefully you are reading this and taking a second look.


Possible ways to get the AllClient error:


Right around the release of IBM Lotus Notes 8.5, the filename for downloaded Lotus Notes webkit files started changing with what seems to be no rhyme or reason. Before 8.5, the file names were the pack number ( CXXXXX )  I believe this may be confusing and causing an issue when upgrading older clients. Check the very end of this post for the file names and package names.


The other scenario is that the older client was installed with the admin/designer/notes and only the notes client is selected. I've heard of people just downloading the admin/designer/notes client and installing that on all computers with only the client selected at install. BEWARE because if this is your case, your installtype will still be 2 even though you only have the Lotus Notes client portion installed which should be installtype 6, clear as mud right? If this is the case, you need to install the admin/designer/notes client when you upgrade and not the notes only client ( I'm not sure what license issues this could be causing with everyone running the admin/designer/notes client too ). To fix this, you need to manually uninstall the current notes client and install the client only.


Last, IBM Lotus Notes version 8.0, 8.0.1, 8.0.2 all had a basic version of admin/designer/notes where 8.5 and later do not have a basic version of admin/designer/notes. This has nothing to do with instaltype but just wanted you to keep that in mind.


FYI
-a standard ( Eclipse ) install can launch the basic client by adding the -sa in the shortcut. If the shortcut has the notes.ini appended after the exe, put the -sa in between. 


-admin/designer/notes client cannot be installed as mutliuser

NOTE: like I stated above, if you install both these clients as is displayed on two different machines, they will only install the lotus notes portion of the client. However the install types are still different and you need to stick with the same install type. Even thought the All Client only has the Notes Client installed, you cannot install the Notes Client as an upgrade and vice versa.


Also you can check the person documents under Administration tab > Client Information > Notes client license(s). Note that this isn't full proof but it will give you an idea of who is running what without having to go to the physical machines. Make sure there is a pc and client build entry at the bottom:
If you have installtype=6 ( Notes client ) then it will display 
"Lotus Notes"

However if you have installtype=2 ( All Client ) Then it will display 
"Lotus Notes Designer
Lotus Notes Administrator"

Lotus Notes 8.5.2 Roaming - No prompt to upgrade

Last week I hit an issue of a user not getting the prompt for roaming user upgrade. I've down graded roaming, then re-setup roaming but still the user didn't receive the prompt. The adminp process only shows

Which the document link shows In Progress and an hourglass next to the person document. The person logs into a different computer almost every time. So the issue must reside either in the person document or mail file right?

Well I ended up creating a new person document for the user by clicking "Add Person" and copying and pasting all the data from the old person document to the newly created one. Before I saved the newly created document I deleted the old one ( also I copied and pasted into a temp nab on my machine just in case ) and hit save and close on the newly created person document. The idea being a setting or field that is not displayed in the form is preventing the user from upgrading. The next day I still had issues with the user not getting prompted.

Finally I checked the local log.nsf of the user and found this error message:

Unable to get roaming upgrade lock, exiting roaming upgrade

When I Google searched for that error, I found one link to the forum that someone else had a similar issue and they had the notes.ini parameter client_clock=1 enabled on their client. Fortunately this person posted all the code because I noticed a line saying:

So I re-created the mail file by doing File > Database / Application > New Copy on the server. Then moved the current mail file outside the data folder and renamed the new copy the same as the moved mail file. A few days later the user received the roaming upgrade prompt! The only downside is the user has to reset their unread marks. If that didn't work I thought about creating a new blank mail file just to get them to upgrade roaming and then revert to the old mail file ( not sure if this would work though ).

I then checked the last thread in the forum and the user basically said the same process fixed his issue too. DOH! Maybe next time I will read the entire thread and save my self the headache!

I sure would like to know if a profile document or regular document is created for this lock. I've tried to 'break' roaming to re-create this but with no success. I am interested if anyone else can shed some light on this roaming upgrade lock process.

Lotus Script to check if a server is available

After searching through the Lotus Notes forums and blogs looking for code to determine if a server was up or not I figured out a good solution. Some of the examples I found use a template or database to check if the server is up. However there might be that chance that the template file is corrupt or missing. So here is a code snippet using the NotesDBDirectory class:

Issue with Lotus Quickplace to Lotus Quickr upgrade and place authentication

Recently I followed the wiki to upgrade Lotus Quickplace 6.5.1 to Lotus Quickr 8.2.

The problem is that the Lotus Quickr server had no directory authentication ( doesn't use domino or ldap ) and used authentication on a place by place biases. The upgrade cause a problem because the the default authentication for the web was using the names.nsf?login HTML form. When using this form to authenticate quickplace logins, it would fail every time.

To fix this there is a technote ( QPTR5UC3XP )

This technote basically says to create a domcfg.nsf database and create a custom login form. The custom login form will point to LotusQuickr/resources.nsf ( in Quickplace 7 and before the path was Quickplace/resources.nsf ) and the Target Form is QuickPlaceLoginForm.

If you have a directory type of (No Directory) and Name (No Name), this change is important because with out it you will not be able to log into your places.

DAOS issue, databases marked but not processing

I ran into an issue with a DAOS server where many databases are marked for DAOS ( admin client > Files > select databases > advanced properties > enable DAOS ). The problem is that some databases had attachments removed and stored in DAOS and other databases didn't. Doing a

I ended up doing a
load compact -c xxxxx.nsf

and that forced the attachments to be removed and stored in DAOS. Also don't forget to apply Fix Pack 3 to all DAOS servers if you are running 8.5.1!

Instant Messaging Sametime error

Had this error while trying to send an image over Lotus Sametime chat. I found out that the integrated instant messaging ("Sametime") for Lotus Notes 8.x basic and all versions below cannot receive rich text or images. On the full Lotus Sametime client or Lotus Notes Standard ( eclipse ) integrated client will send and receive images and rich text. Below is the error message

I have yet to try running maintenance on the server's address book, but it seems to be a harmless message. The address book was also upgraded to ODS51 recently.

Weird error on 8.5.1 Notes client

Has anyone seen this error before?

It says CLFNM0257E: An error occurred trying to get a previewer from COR. Please contact your administrator. Widget is disposed

Then after I click ok my preview pane no longer works. However closing the tab and re-opening it fixes the issue. I am running 64 bit vista...

Weird right?

Update: this error seems to only happen with I use my scroll wheel on my mouse... It opens an email at random when I'm scrolling and that error shows up. When I close the email the preview pane doesn't work.

Lotus Sametime issues with tunneling

The other day I ran into an issue with a sametime website not displaying. When i type www.mysametimeserver.com the page returned to my browser was blank. Even if I view page source there is nothing there!

However, if I type www.mysametimeserver.com:8088 the web pages returns with stcenter.nsf. This is sometimes ok except that I had issues with sametime connect download ( error: "This feature has not been enabled" in the popup window ). However I got this working by editing the download.properties and checked the property:

installer.root.base=http://w.mysametimeserver.com:8088/sametime/network-install

The sametime connect download window would come up ok, but only under IE 8 and Google Chrome 3.x. My Firefox 3.5.3 did not like it and still displayed the error "This feature has not been enabled". Weird right?

When looking at one of the servers I saw this on the console:

Process D:\Lotus\Domino\stbroadcastgateway.exe (4628/0x1214) has terminated abnormally

It would show up every few minutes and didn't stop. I had two server's with this issue and only one server had this error on the console.

The one temperamental thing about sametime servers is the fully qualified internet host name field on the domino server document. The server must be able to resolve this name to itself. The issue with the two sametime servers is the FQHN did not resolve to the IP address on the server. It resolved to an IP address that was NAT'd to the internet.

As a test, I pinged the FQHN and it did resolve the NAT'd address instead of the server's address. Next, I made a change in the window's hosts file to resolve the IP address to the server's IP address. A quick ping revealed this worked.

For the Lotus Sametime server to update this, the Domino server must be restarted. After the restart everything worked.

Lotus Notes 8.5.1 RCP Base Plug-in not found

I had a co-worker receive this error while upgrading from Lotus Notes 8.5 to 8.5.1. After looking closer she had 8.5 standard full install with admin and designer. The issue was the 8.5.1 package installed was the 8.5.1 standard only ( CZ5S3EN ) when it should have been 8.5.1 Standard full ( CZ5S0EN ). After running the correct install, the error did not come back

I had a co-worker get "Cannot upgrade AllClient installation to Notes client. The upgrade you are attempting is not supported" when upgrading from 8.5 to 8.5.1. After some google searching I found that you have to change the InstallType=2 to InstallType=6 in your notes.ini.

Here is a list of valid values for Installtype

Valid Values for notes 7 are:

2 - All client install (including Designer and Administrator)

3 - Notes client only

In previous versions of Notes this variable had many more values. It used to be used to Identifies the type of Notes client installed, as follows:

0 = Designer License Type

1 = Administration License Type

2 = Designer and Administration License Type

3 = Domino Mail Server License Type

4 = Domino Enterprise Server License Type

5 = Domino Application Server License Type

6 = Notes Client License Type

7 = Notes lite License Type

9 = Unknown, set by default at start of installation process, set for shared install

In this instance, a co worker was trying to install the admin / designer 8.5.1 client over the admin / designer 8.5 client. Why the InstallType needed to be changed from 2 to 6 is beyond me, but it works. IBM also has a tech note relating to this and they explain that the difference is between older versions and the 'all client' and 'client only'. Check the reference below under Upgrade. IBM's official fix for this is to uninstall Lotus Notes and install the correct package.

For smart upgrade users, this can be an issue when trying to roll out the installer. check the reference below for the full detail. The error is the same, the InstallType is 2 and needs to be changed to 6.
